De Urbanisten proudly tested the Toolbox for Soil Subsidence with the municipality of Dordrecht

After concluding the research on Subsidence and Heritage for the municipality of Gouda, De Urbanisten recently led a workshop testing the Toolbox for Subsidence with the city of Dordrecht.

Like in much of the lower parts of the Netherlands, the peaty soil under the city has been subsiding for centuries and will continue to do so for centuries to come.  We investigated possible approaches to the diverse problems caused by this process: uneven streets, damage to protected buildings and public spaces, accessibility, flooding.

The toolbox was developed with the support of the Knowledge Center for Soil Subsidence and Foundations - Kenniscentrum voor Bodemdaling en Erfgoed (kbf.nl) as part of a broader e-learning program to help local governments, land owners and the private sector in tackling issues related to subsidence.

The toolbox proved to be a helpful and fun way for the local administration to address soils subsidence in public space and bring to the table long-term strategies. We are looking forward to share our expertise with many of the other delta cities facing similar challenges
